Expanding Our Horizons: Up and Out!

Oh, good heavens!

We have reached the next stage of development at our house.

Last week, I had a friend over to help with the kids so that I could get a few things done. Beth hung with the kids and the therapists in the living room while I ran upstairs to quickly clean the bathroom (it so needed to be done!). I came downstairs to find the physical therapist teaching my kids how to climb up on the couch.

What?!?!

Me: Uh...what are you doing?!
Therapist: I'm teaching them how to climb up on the couch.
Me: *slightly panicked* Don't do that! Seriously!
Therapist: But it's a skill they need to master.
Me: Okay, I get that, but pick a different skill and we will work on that one later.
Therapist: They need to learn it how to do it.
Me: But not to today. Seriously, don't teach them how to do that.
Therapist: It's really important that they learn how to get off of the couch safely though.
Me: Okay, then teach them how to get off of the couch. Just don't teach them how to get on it. They will figure it out soon enough as it is!

I love our therapists and really, REALLY appreciate all they do for our kids. But, there is the ideal, and then there is reality. Reality with quadruplets means not teaching them how to climb up on anything! How in the world will I contain them once they learn how to climb??

Four days later....

How's that for a Victory Dance! Haha!

So, Sean and I expanded their roaming area in a bid to keep kids off of furniture. We now have a gate at the bottom of the stairs and a gate to the kitchen. Even though I find myself doing more hurdles during the day (honestly, I'm sure my waistline appreciates it), the kids seem to be enjoying their new found freedom.

(It's a little blurry because I only had my phone handy when they all lined up.)

Being silly!

Okay...I'll admit it. It is kind of fun watching them explore more and getting to interact with them while I cook dinner. :) I guess this new stage is exciting for all of us. I love my little people!

  2. You are such a great story teller! I can just imagine you descending the stairs in horror discovering the "climbing" lesson! :)

  3. I think safety gates are one of those things us moms of multiples should buy shares in. They're like lifesavers sometimes :)

  4. Our kids are in physical therapy too. I can relate with you on the reality of four climbing on everything. The therapists are wonderful, but can teach them them to climb and then go home while you are left with four climbing babies! I love the video. Thanks for linking to Multiples Monday on Capri + 3.

    1. It kinda makes me nervous to even leave them long enough to go to the bathroom! I'm getting to the point where I time my trips in there with their naptime just so that I know where they are!

  6. Your kiddos are adorable! I have identical twin boys, and I SOO remember moving the gates a little further, a little further.....And I remember Early Intervention telling me we had to teach them to get on and off the couch AND climb the stairs! UGH! I still get nervous when they're on the stairs and they are almost 5! Love your blog, I'm here from M&MN....I'm off to read more!

Oh my...I can't even imagine having five year olds at this point! Hopefully everybody is a little bit steadier by then!

    1. Exactly! That's what I tell myself when I'm in a situation like this. I can't expect everyone to *get it* so hopefully I can help people understand that some of the logistics change when you add so many kids into the picture.
