When Toddlers Attack: The Powdered Sugar Saga

My friend, Kristi, wins the award for best title. I posted the photo below on my personal FaceBook and "When Toddlers Attack" was the caption she left on it. So true!

The last time we bought powdered sugar, we bought a 50 pound bag. I'm sure you can see where this is going.

Thankfully, I've used a good amount of it...but apparently not enough!

The kids have figured out how to move the gate surrounding our open pantry. For the most part, the gate is just there as a visual deterrent. It really doesn't do much to keep them out though. Sadness. I remember the days when I could keep them contained.

So tonight, after dinner, the kids were playing in the living room, and Sean and I were both working at the kitchen table. Elijah came over and knocked their straw cups off of the table and onto the floor. I started helping him understand that he can't just do that and had to pick them all up. Meanwhile, Sean and I heard a commotion from the kitchen.

This is how it works. One child creates a distraction, while the others get into more trouble. I swear, they plot against us.

Sean got up to check on the girls while I finished with Elijah, and he found this:

That's powdered sugar. All over my floor. In my purse. They opened my wallet, pulled my money out, and dusted all of that with powdered sugar too.

BUSTED!
My dear sweet girls, the powdered sugar covering your clothes tells the whole story even though you tried to leave the scene of the crime as quickly as possible.
I spent a good chunk of time trying to clean all of that up. Powdered sugar is so fine that it finds every nook and cranny to hide in. I literally had to pull every item out of my purse and clean each piece. They did such a good job spreading it, that there was even a layer of powdered sugar between every dollar bill.

By the time I was done, I had powdered sugar on me and all over the sink, so I had to do a second round of cleaning. Thanks, kids. That's exactly what I wanted to do with my evening.

The good news? I finally found the plastic pickle we were missing (that I didn't know was missing).
It was in my purse. Covered by powdered sugar, of course.

  1. You made my day! Laughed out loud. As Joel's mom would say when she told me tales of him pouring molasses in the oatmeal container and I call him a brat, "He was just curious". When they get to where the boys want to take your toaster or can opener apart, go to Goodwill and get them one to work on. You Amaze M!!e

  2. Sorry, but it really is funny! :-) My trio did the same thing with a potted plant when they were about that age. Diane

  4. haha - such innocent faces though! reminds me of the time when I found all the Hershey's kisses wrappers back in the dish - with nothing inside, and my daughter's chocolate covered mouth sweetly sayin "no mama" when asked. LOL
it's never dull is it? :)

  5. Oh no! So funny, but so bad all at the same time. It's a mess I wouldn't have wanted to clean up either. I guess it's a good thing it was powdered sugar compared to all the other things it could have been. I hope you're still not finding it in random places.

  6. You'll laugh later, but I can sympathize with how frustrated you must have been at the moment! I've been there!

  7. Mine didn't get into my purse, (only bc I never use one), but my floor and broom now have a fine dust of sugar that I'm trying to figure out how to clean up without having to clean up the clean up.
