The Little Things Thursdays: #65

Welcome to The Little Things Thursday!!

If you are new to our link-up, we like to take a minute to look back on the little things that brightened our week. So often we get busy and forget all of the things that we enjoy as we go through our daily lives. This is an opportunity to stop, remember, and enjoy those things! Nothing is too small...in fact, the smaller the better! That's the whole point! If you have a blog, link-up below. If you don't blog, I'd love for you to participate by leaving a comment. Ready?

1. Preschool Paperwork
Probably the most overwhelming part of preschool is the MOUNTAIN of papers that suddenly seems to have accumulated overnight. Weekly schedules, art projects, permission slips to sign, district events, more art work, etc. We are two weeks in, and I have more papers than I know what to do with. I've started taping the weekly schedules to the back of the garage door, and the permission slips get signed and put right back in backpacks, but....what do I do with anywhere from 4-6 art projects coming into my house everyday?? Experienced moms, please weigh in on this! I love them and the kids are so proud, but yikes! I don't have a kitchen counter anymore!

2. Stopping by the Classrooms
One thing I really like (and made sure about before signing up) is that our preschool welcomes parents in the classrooms at anytime. So this week, I decided to take advantage of that and stop by each class to see how the kids were doing, and chat with their teachers to see how they are adjusting. It definitely just reinforced that we made the correct decision for our family!

Caleb didn't notice me for a good quite awhile. I watched him work with his para on choosing activities via pictures since he talks so little. He is in a classroom with one teacher and two paras, and gets one-on-one attention the entire time he is there. The teacher and paras all rotate which day they have him. I'm really grateful for the individualized attention he is getting. He eventually saw me and wanted to leave (surprise, not!), but quickly got distracted with playdoh. We have noticed that he seems to be trying to verbalize a bit more now that he is having to communicate at school.

Abby's first two days were rough, but now she loves preschool! The para in her room told me that she loves the puzzle station and spends most of her free time there. When I visited the room, she saw me, ran over to give me a kiss, and then showed me the puzzle section. She wasn't sorry to see me leave at all. :)

Elijah also saw me when I walked into his room. What surprised me the most is that he was sitting in the middle of the floor playing with some pegs, and stopped to pick up everything before coming over to see me. He obviously wanted to get up right away and show me the room, but apparently he already understands the rules that he can't leave a project/toy out. No one even prompted him to pick up. He just did it. Um...hey, buddy? Why don't you do that at home?!

And then there is Ellie. Ellie is in her element. She can't get enough of school! It normally takes her 10-15 minutes to wake up and get out of bed. I told her on Monday that we needed to get up and go to school, and she was out of bed in 10 seconds. She would LIVE at school if she could! Her favorite thing to do? Paint! Her teacher said that she would paint all day long if she let her. I'm delighted to see her thriving and loving school! I hope that is always the case!

3. First Field Trip
This week, the kids are going on their first field trip to the Nelson Atkins Museum. When the teachers told me that they were taking the kids to the museum, my response was, "Really? You are going to take a bunch of three-year-olds to a museum?!" But I signed the permission slips anyway. I figured, well, if they knock over some priceless piece of art, at least they weren't my responsibility.

So today, Caleb and Ellie went with their classes, and tomorrow Elijah and Abby get to go with their classes. So far, Caleb and Ellie didn't break anything. However, according to Ellie's teacher, Ellie is now best friends with the museum curator. Apparently, Ellie walked right up to her, said, "Hi! I'm Ellie!" and then proceeded to hold her hand and sit on her lap for the rest of the time there. LOL!

4. Follow-Up with the Orthopedist
I went back to the orthopedist today for a follow-up on my leg. They took a new set of x-rays, and everything is completely healed! Yay! While I don't have to go back to see him anymore, I do have six weeks of physical therapy in front of me. Although the bone is healed, the muscles are really tight and that makes it hard to get around and get down on the floor. So six weeks of PT, and then I should officially be able to put this behind me!

  1. Isn't it fascinating to watch each child's personality come out in play and how they respond to interruption? I had a friend over yesterday and she couldn't get over how very different my two boys are. Only 21 months between them, but they are literally as different as night and day. They don't even look similar! It really, really fascinates me. Thanks for sharing your corner with us each week!!

  2. Artwork suggestion - take a pic of each piece of artwork and make books at the end of the year for each child using the pictures. Shutterfly, Walgreens etc usually runs specials on their books.

  4. Sounds like it's been an interesting week in the Ishum household. Glad to hear the kids are enjoying school and learning new things along the way. The museum would have made me nervous as well, but it seems it went off without a hitch. I'm not a mom, but I remember as a kid my mom would take all of our art projects and put them in a designated folder for each of us. It might turn into a lot, but at least it will keep each child's separate and somewhat organized. I like the photo book idea though.

  5. I love Lindsay's suggestion to take photos of the artwork, then make books of the photos. If you want to display some artwork now (maybe one piece for each kid at a time?), I suggest the Da.Vin.ci frames. They're kind of like shadow boxes, but open at the front. You could have one frame for each kid, holding his/her favorite piece of artwork that week? Then change out the next week? Just an idea.

  6. commenting on your pt. along with the pt and/or after the pt, you might check about attending an arthritis aquatic class. it is not limited to those with arthritis. and the water exercises are not limited to the injured area but from head to toe. you will be surprised how much more you can exercise in water than you can on land. it helps build strength and regain range-of-motion. it's been a huge help to me.

  7. The little things that brightened my week were that (1) my cat let me pet him up again and laid on me like usual the day after taking him to the vet for his teeth cleaning; (2) my husband picked me up at the bus stop with the car so I didn't have to walk in the rain and cold and would get home sooner; (3) continued to set new records on Lumosity; (4) enjoyed seeing DIVERGENT..

  8. I have been listening to these ladies and love a lot of their ideas. We are not at the stage where they do art work yet, but I am going to try to put some of these ideas to use when we do get there. http://clutterinterrupted.com/
