Update on the Babies--I can feel them move!

I’m officially home now. Last Thursday was my last day of employment. This week has seemed a bit strange without having to drag my butt out of bed and get to work. While I’m not on bed rest yet, I was slowing down quite significantly, and we decided it was time for me to come home and get more rest. I’m still trying to get things done around the house (in moderation, of course) to live up to my new title. Sean has dubbed me the House Manager.  He’s so funny! I guess he knew that I still needed to feel like I’m bringing something to the team while I’m waiting for the kids to show up.

Our most recent check-up went really well yesterday! Tomorrow will be 21 weeks for me, and I’m still not on bed rest! We were beyond happy when the doctor said that I can still move around as long as I don’t overdo it. I believe the doctor’s exact words were, “You have a cervix of steel!” That’s the nicest compliment I’ve been paid this week! So I’m good to go for another two weeks as long as nothing changes.

The babies checked out really well. They are all weighing in between 12-14 oz each. Ellie appears to be the smallest in terms of size. Her gestational age is 20 weeks. The rest are coming in between 20 weeks, 3 days and 20 weeks, 5 days. The ultrasonographer said that even with the slight differences in size, they are all on the right track and there is nothing to worry about. She also did another round of growth measurements. Everything is proportional on each baby, and she didn’t see any potential problems with cleft lips, etc. Happy news all the way around!

This week I’ve really started to feel the babies move. Up until now, it’s just been the occasional flutter here or there. In the last few days, it’s turned into what feels like little popping popcorns…either that or it might be just some serious cravings. :-P Caleb and Elijah are definitely the most active of the babies. Ah, my boys! Should I be worried?!

We’ve had a bunch of people ask us what colors we’ve assigned to the babies. I read about this online and then the quad family in the north metro area reminded us about this little tip in order to keep baby accessories straight. We certainly aren’t planning on dressing them only in their colors, but armed with a set of sharpies, I hope to keep track of their bottles, pacifiers, etc. I don’t want to feed the same baby twice in one sitting, so color coding should help with that! Here’s what we’ve got (along with their nicknames!):

Caleb = Blue
Abby = Purple
Eli = Green
Ellie = Pink

The Kansas City Star did a wonderful write-up on our family on New Year’s Day! We are kind of amazed that these different media outlets are picking up our story. We haven’t personally done anything to let them know about all of the big changes taking place over here, but one of Sean’s coworker’s has taken on the project of keeping Kansas City in the loop. We were really blessed to have such a nice article written about us. It also has a little more information than what was in the news segment from a month ago. In case you missed it, you can read it here.

Speaking of big news, there was a lot of it flying around over the holidays! My brother, Mike, and sister-in-law, Sarah, announced that they are expecting their first baby July. Yay! A baby cousin is on the way for our little guys! And a few days later, my sister, Hannah, got engaged to her boyfriend, Jeff! My parents are going to be super busy next year with a wedding and 5 grandbabies on the way!

2011 is proving to be quite the exciting year! We’re just hoping that our babies don’t get too excited about showing up before March. Now that we are in the new year and I've transitioned home, I feel like the countdown has officially begun!

  1. I'm happy to know the "colors" for each of your babies!! I actually meant to ask you about this weeks ago and had completely forgotten. :)

    Love reading your updates! It's crazy for me to imagine what you're going through since I'm overwhelmed expecting just one baby in late February/early March!!

  2. Rebecca, I was on bed rest with our son, Nate, almost 16 years ago. I was only down for about 3 weeks and found playing video games actually helped pass the time. Add this to daily Bible reading to pass the time. Send e-mails to friends or actually write letters, LOL, to people you have not visited with for a while! Make apologies or thanks or just catch up.

    If you know how to knit or crochet, make something simple for each baby, like a coming home hat.

    Sorry you had to give away your cat, but it will be for the best. I did that with a dog at this time also. You will be so busy, and don't want a baby left on the floor in a rocker, to be in danger of a jealous rambunctious cat...

    My best to you after this beautiful sunny day.

  4. Glad to read another great report. I can't imagine the amount of "corn popping" you must feel. Hang in there and keep taking care of those little ones.
