Letters from Dad: #3

“I could never do what you do.”

We hear that phrase quite a bit in regards to raising quadruplets. Usually we say something like, “You make it work.” But what I really want to say is, “Yeah, you’re right. With that defeatist attitude, there is no way you could do what we do.” There are a ton of books and motivational speakers out there that will tell you a lot of life has to do with your attitude, and it is true. If you look at things with a pessimistic “this isn’t going to work” attitude, then it’s not going work. There are several verses that followers of Christ cling to that at times they seem to forget. Some of them are:

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. –Philippians 4:13

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for a human master. –Colossians 3:23

Why do I mention these? Because nothing is impossible when you rely on God. Yes, I get that sometimes things suck, and they don’t go your way.  And yes, some people have a better life than others and things just don’t make sense.  But here is the thing; it has never been easy for followers of God.

"Wait, what? No, that’s not true. Everything is supposed to be unicorns and chocolate covered cherries if you are a Christian."

For real? What book were you reading?  The Bible I read doesn’t have a bunch of happy stories in it.  I recently finished reading about the life of David. Here are the highlights that most people know regardless of whether they went to church or not: David killed Goliath, a towering juggernaut, with three smooth stones and then was later king. Here’s what people don’t know: The previous King hunted David and tried to kill him several times, but David wouldn’t fight back because King Saul was God’s anointed. When David was King, he had an affair and then had the husband of his love interest killed. The baby that came of that liaison didn’t live. Later, David’s sons would quarrel amongst themselves and try to take over the kingdom. One son raped his sister; those were David’s own kids!  I mention all of this because David was anointed King as he had a heart after God’s own. So you would think that if his heart was after God’s, he would have always done right and would have lived a charmed life. I’m just not seeing that. I’m sure that there were many perks to being king but there was also a lot of heartache and tragedy that went along with it.

The moral of all of this is that we as human beings have a boat load of excuses of why we can’t do things, but in reality, if we were to humble ourselves before God, He would help us accomplish the plan He has set before us. Admittingly, this is not an easy thing to do. People die. People get sick. Jobs are lost. Homes are lost. Natural disasters occur. It is easy to get swept up in the tragedy that life brings.

Yes, life with 4 babies of the same age has produced a myriad of challenges, but it has also been an experience to fortify our relationship with God. We could never do what we do if it wasn’t for Christ who gives us strength. Some say that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. I say God gives you chances to work on your faith.
