The Dairy Aisle: Healthy Eating with Simple Foods

I don't know about you, but I want the biggest nutritional kick possible for my dollar. I look for items that are whole grain, high fiber, and high protein. I have four growing toddlers, and Sean and I are trying to stop growing (ha!), so I have changed my shopping habits to head more towards whole foods. Our refrigerator normally has a nice assortment of milk, cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, eggs, and yogurt. Okay, okay...and I occasionally pick up a tube of chocolate chip cookie dough too. A girl can only be so strong!

I was fascinated to find out that there is a National Frozen and Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA). It makes sense that there is one, I just had never thought about it until I started reading up on them and June as National Dairy Month.
The NFRA is currently focusing on promoting the convenience, taste, and healthy options available in the dairy department. They are encouraging the trend toward healthy foods and helping people realize that mealtime inspiration can be found in the refrigerator.

With the number of items available with one or an extremely limited ingredient list, I couldn't agree more! There are plenty of real, simple foods that make great building blocks to healthy meals. What's even better is that those items can be used to make a wide range of meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Options are always good!
If you are looking for some new twists on meals, makes sure you check the NFRA's blog where chef and culinary expertAida Mollenkamp, introduces some fun and unique dishes that you can make by shopping the dairy aisle (check out the Apple Pie Grilled Cheese Sandwich! Yummy!).

They are constantly updating their website, FaceBook, Twitter, and Pinterest, so make sure you check those, and there is a Twitter party to chat about mealtime inspiration on Thursday, June 27th at 8pm. If you'd like to participate and also win some gift cards, just click HERE to RSVP.
Here's to healthy, convenient eating with simple foods from the farm!

  2. That's cool that they are trying to focus on healthier alternatives.

One of our summer favorites is an oatmeal shake for breakfast. I love to use almond milk in it to help sweeten it up with a touch of yogurt. yum!

    1. Absolutely! I think the more educated people become about nutrition and how accessible it is, the better off we will be!

    1. Oh man, I love cheese too! I buy it in bulk when it goes on sale and store it in my freezer. I don't think a person can ever have too much cheese!
