A Weekend of Milestones

Our big weekend started with a call from the doctor that went like this: “Are you sitting down?”

This is what we got to do when we got to the hospital on Saturday!

Caleb getting dressed for the first time…

…and moving to his new crib!!

Abby getting dressed for the first time…

…and moving to her new crib!!

Caleb and Abby both met all of the criteria to move to cribs! They are over 3 lbs. 5 oz., at least 34 weeks gestation, and had gained weight steadily for at least five days. Their big job in their new cribs is to keep their temperatures at least at 36.5 degrees Celsius, and they’ve done a great with that! They are both dealing with a bit of reflux, and the doctor wrote an order for the head of their beds to be elevated to help with that, but that isn’t abnormal for such little guys. It’s so fun to be able to walk in and see them right away without them being covered up and behind little plastic walls!

Eli and Ellie also got to start wearing clothes as well! The nurse already had them dressed by the time that I got there, so I didn’t get to take pictures. :-) Next time I go up and we are doing cares with them, I’ll try to remember to take photos of them in their clothes so that y’all can see how cute they are too!

Eli tried to move to a crib also, but couldn’t quite keep his temperature up high enough to stay there. Hopefully he can try again in the next few days. Ellie won’t get to try for a while longer, but she did finally cross the threshold of 3 lbs last night!

Abby also hit one other major milestone: She started oral feedings! I got to try to nurse her for the first time on Saturday! Both of us were a little unsure of what we were doing, but I think we’ll get it figured out before too long. :-) The goal right now is just for her to learn how to nurse and not necessarily to eat anything. It will be another week or two before they expect her to actually get any nutrients that way. Right now, they are having her try to nurse, while at the same time running breast milk into her little belly through her feeding line. She is learning to associate feeling full with the action of nursing. Her job at the moment is to learn the “suck, swallow, breathe” pattern so that she can eventually get everything she needs from nursing or a bottle.

So many milestones all at once! Although we haven’t been given any sort of date when they might start coming home, I still feel like we are in the “counting down” stage!

  15. Your next surprising phone calls are just around the corner- "today so and so gets to go home!" It was so fas to us how that happened. One day we walk in and they say "so and so" gets to go home in 2 days if they don't have any brady episodes and we're like "what?"
I'm so excited for you- that is a HUGE milestone of many to come. Praise God! Great Job and get ready! :)

  16. They are getting so big, congrats to all the milestones. Your on the last leg, its now the feed and grow stage. It seemed ours were stuck on that stage for along time. The babies had to take all the bottles at all feedings for 2 days and not have any bradies. We thought we were gonna take 1 one, then when we came in the day before we were told it was gonna be 2 and the 3rd just a few days later. Well the few days turned into 2 weeks, then it was a struggle to get little Zachary home, he was missing his brothers and sister.

So does St Luke's not allow co-bedding? We co-bedded ours after doing a little research and reading that its quite beneficial to calming and developmental growth. Since they grew for so long next to each other in the womb. There are a lot of NICU's out there that are doing it more and more for multiple birth babies. That maybe something to ask about.

  24. The McCleary Quads, no they don't allow co-bedding anymore for SIDS risk. I asked about it while my little ones were at St Lukes earlier this year.

The NP said they even had to remove pictures from the walls showing multiples co-bedding.

  25. Rebecca, those milestones are so wonderful...and to think they're all over 3 pounds at last.

It's been hard for me to imagine holding a 3 pound baby, until recently. Bill and I got two puppies, each weighed about 3 pounds. Then I got it...Wow your babies were/are small. A puppy's one thing but a BABY that small...what a miracle.

I am thrilled that God continues to care of your little ones so well in addition to giving you and Sean more time to prepare for having them all at home. How exciting that will be. I'll continue to watch for your updates so I can pray and share in your joy.

    In Him, Patty Hubbard
