(Another) Shattered Electronic

Oh good grief. Electronics and I do not mix.

Do you remember this little mishap from June?

Shattered Laptop

Well, the good news is that my friend from church took it home and asked her husband to fix it. A week later, it was as good as new. I'm now super careful about where I put my feet while walking through the toy minefield that is our living room.

And then Saturday happened.

I was out at the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk to support some good friends of ours, and it was so cold that everyone was bouncing up and down trying to stay warm. (Wednesday the high was in the 80s. Saturday, the high was in the 40s...that's Kansas City weather for you!)

I went to pull my cell phone out of my pocket and the combination of slightly numb fingers, and being out of practice manuvering in my winter coat caused my phone to slip out of my hands...

...and shatter on the asphalt.

I think the best part of it was a friend who turned around and looked at my phone on the ground.

Friend: ...didn't you do something like this to your laptop awhile ago?
Me: Yeah....
Friend: *to everyone else in the group* She's not so good with electronics.

Sheesh! I'd say she's right! At least this time I didn't have the over emotional weep-fest that marked the demise of my laptop. This time, I simply picked my phone back up and thought, "Well, no one got hurt or died. This is just a replaceable thing."

BUT, my thing does need to be replaced now. :(

It still works but the screen is significantly cracked and pieces are starting to chip off. We ran by the Sprint store on the way home from church today, and they said it would be $100 to replace the screen. For that price, I might as well just get a new phone.

So I'm looking for cell phone suggestions. Do any of you have a favorite phone that you can recommend? Or one that I should avoid? I use my phones until they don't work anymore (this is the first time that I've smashed one) and generally put off upgrading as long as possible. I'm due for one now which is good, but I want to make sure that I get a good one!

I really like keyboards on my phone, but there don't seem to be many choices with that feature anymore. So I definitely need a phone with a big enough screen to easily text.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

This morning, Sean asked with a grin if I wanted to hold his tablet for a minute. What a goofball! (and I said "No!")

  1. The new Google Nexus comes out in the next couple days. (There was a Google event tomorrow morning but it was cancelled because of the Hurricane.) Or you could go with the Samsung Galaxy S3. Don't let me down on this one sis.

  2. iPhone! A few months ago DH and I both upgraded to iPhones (I got the 4, he got the 4s) and love them. I was sad about not having a slide out keyboard anymore, but it's still much nicer than my old one.

    1. I've heard good things about those and one of them is on sale at Sprint right now (I don't need the newest one). Good to know that you love your phone in spite of not having a keyboard. I think I'm going to have to make the transition.

  3. I had to have a keyboard too, and I got the Samsung Galaxy. It's a touchscreen phone, but with a full slide out keyboard. I love having the keyboard to text (I suck at the touch screen typing - which is why I ultimately gave up my iPhone).

Hope you find the perfect phone for you!

  6. Although we have never met, let me just say I love reading your blog! I have been known from time to time to drop and shatter my phone too, I have used Mission Repair in Olathe to replace screens on our phones for very reasonable prices usually around $20-$30. http://www.missionrepair.com/

Hope you get a working phone soon!!

    1. Thank you for the kind words, Heidi!

I never even thought about trying to find a place other than Sprint to fix it! Brilliant! Thank you for the suggestion! I love my phone, so this might be the perfect route. Thanks!

  7. I love Samsungs, the Google Nexus is brilliant - I love anything Android - not too hip on Apple or their products for a number of reasons. . .
