The Little Things Thursdays: #84

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for supporting our family and blog!

Welcome to The Little Things Thursday!!

If you are new to our link-up, we like to take a minute to look back on the little things that brightened our week. So often we get busy and forget all of the things that we enjoy as we go through our daily lives. This is an opportunity to stop, remember, and enjoy those things! Nothing is too small...in fact, the smaller the better! That's the whole point! If you have a blog, link-up below. If you don't blog, I'd love for you to participate by leaving a comment. Ready?

1. Special Education Teachers are Brave
Handing Elijah a pile of shaving cream and telling him to have fun with it is totally not my idea of a good time. Yet, all of the sped teachers do this activity with their students. You give everyone an apron and a big pile of shaving cream, and let them explore it as a sensory activity. The kids love it! But I can't imagine trying to wipe down 12-17 kids after. Holy moley!

Let me tell you though, those tables are CLEAN when they are done!

2. Ellie...and Some Really Big Shoes
Elijah decorated these shoes last year as part of a class project. Then they came home in his backpack. For months, they have been floating around our house as different kids wear them. I keep almost throwing them away, but these are the most favorite dress-up accessory that we own. And I don't know why! We have a whole TUB of dress-up clothes and shoes, and yet these ginormous men's shoes with paint on them that the teacher found at a thrift store are the highlight.

Why do I bother buying these kids anything to play with?!

3. Caleb's Cardiology Follow Up
There is really nothing to say here. His follow up went GREAT! The coils are where they need to be, his blood flow is perfect....he got a clean bill of health! One more follow up in six months, and he will officially be DISCHARGED from cardiology! So excited when we finally reach that day!

4. Ishum Family Dinner
Sean's grandparents, aunt, and cousins drove in from Illinois for the weekend a couple of weeks ago. We had a big family dinner so that we could all visit, and the kids had a grand time getting to know their cousins, Christian and Gabriel. I also figured out how to work the timer on the camera to snap this photo of all of us!

5. Frozen Pajamas
Abby and Ellie
I have seen Frozen so many times now that I can watch the whole movie in my head while I'm asleep. This movie is crazy popular at our house! All of our kids love it, but Abby and Ellie especially identify with it. Ellie likes to point out that she's Elsa (Ellie/Elsa...get it?) and Abby is Anna (same concept Abby/Anna). And they are sisters just like Ellie and Abby are sisters.

IT'S MEANT TO BE!!!
Lol! So my friends on FaceBook know that we have a Frozen obsession over here. Last week, Stephanie who is a real life friend and a blogger from Moments That Take My Breath Away, emailed me that her daughter had grown out of her Frozen pajamas...and would we like them?

The level of joy reached new heights in this house when the girls got out of the bathtub and saw their surprise pajamas. There was singing. There was dancing. There were multiple impromptu hugs because it had *finally* happened. There was even a little gazing into the mirror to verify that the pajamas were, in fact, real. They were officially Princess Elsa and Princess Anna (Elsa is a princess at our house).

How hard is it to get them ready for bed right now? Let's just say that Ellie's first request when I picked her up from school this week was, "Can I go home and wear my Elsa pajamas??"
Abby and Ellie

6. Young Living August Order
Well, our CSA plan didn't quite work out this summer, so I don't get to share our produce bags with you...but at least I get to share my monthly haul from Young Living! It's my favorite day of the month! I try to get something new each month, just to explore the different options they have.

This month, I got a bottle of Thieves cleaner, and I LOVE it! It takes anything off of the counters, and it's so concentrated that a capful will work for a whole spray bottle of water. I even took in some of the cleaner to my kids' teachers and they've commented that it works better than other cleaners they've tried.

I got the small bottle this month to see if I even liked it. Looks like I'll be getting the big bottle next month since I gave away so much of this one!

I'm also starting to prepare for cold and flu season. If you look in the photo, you'll see Di-Gize and Thieves. Di-Gize helps with vomiting/diarrhea/stomach aches and Thieves helps protect against germs. I'm trying to start collecting what I need now so that we are prepared come winter. I can't say that I'm looking forward to it this year, but at least I don't feel as helpless!

And then I got everything below for free as the August promo items with my orders. Supplements for bone and joint health, and two each of Eucalyptus Blue (respiratory oil), White Fir (great for muscles), and Peppermint (which does just about everything). I love grabbing the free stuff!

Now it's your turn! What Little Things brightened up your week? Link up your post below (or leave a comment if you aren't a blogger) and make sure you come back next week to play again!

The link up rules are super simple!
1. Please add the button or a text link to your sidebar or post to share the fun that we are having over here!
2. Please visit at least one other blog linking up and leave some blog love. Maybe you will find someone else's "little thing" is exactly what you needed to read!
3. Please keep your linked post clean and respectful! Any links directing to offensive posts will be deleted.

Beginning of the Year "Teacher Questionnaire" + Printable

I knew I wanted to do this when the kids started school, and I'm so glad that I did!

I don't know about you, but the mountain of paperwork that goes with having kids is staggering. I think we should all agree that giving birth to kids is more like giving birth to never-ending forms. Seriously. But one thing that I did appreciate about our latest round of paperwork from the school, was that the teachers wanted to know about our kids and what their strengths, struggles, and preferences are.
So I thought, why not return the favor?

I think it's pretty well known that teachers are underpaid for what they are asked to do. They buy a lot of supplies out of their own pockets and skip doing anything special for themselves. I learned this first hand during summer school. I took my kids to school one morning, got drink orders, then made a run to the Sonic Morning Drink Stop (or whatever they call it) for $1 large drinks. I think I ended up getting 10 drinks for $10, and it was one of the highlights of their week. Friends, they sent me thank you notes. Thank you notes because I went and got them a $1 drink to thank them for their hard work. If that's not humbling, I don't know what is.
So when school started back up this year, I knew I wanted to collect a little more info to have on hand. I gave all the teachers and paras in our four classrooms the same Teacher Questionnaire that included birthday, favorite drink, favorite snack, favorite color, and the open ended question of what would you do with an extra $10?

The replies have been really eye opening. It's given me some good ideas of things to keep an eye out for at consignment sales and in clearance aisles (for the classroom) and I now know that one para shares my love for Hot Tamales candy while another one is allergic to peanuts.
We have 4 teachers and 6 paras this year between our four kids. If all it takes to show these women how much we appreciate them is a box of provolone cheez-its, cool ranch doritos, and some fresh green grapes (all favorite snacks according to the papers they sent back), then I'm happy to surprise them one of these days.

Want to love a little more on your kids' teachers and paras this year? Please feel free to print out my Teacher Questionnaire to get some ideas! It's nothing fancy, but it's the perfect way to start building a relationship with them!

If you'd like the PDF version of the Teacher Questionnaire, you can find it here.

Letters from Dad: #17

(Once a month, I invite Sean to take over the blog and write a little note to our kids. I love that he is willing to leave little nuggets of wisdom for them to look back on when they are older!

Dear Children,

This month, you started your first full year of full-time preschool. Last year, you went half days, four days a week for a partial semester. This year, you are going full days, five days a week.

The school you are going to is so big compared to your old school. You all walked in, your little 3½-year-old-selves, like it was old hat. Daddy could not have been more proud and yet sad at the same time. Only 3½-years-old, and you little kids are already taking on the world. You kids are so awesome. I wish you could stay young forever and never have to know responsibility, but each day you will learn a little more and a little more.

Already, three of you are doing so well with using the potty. Yes, there are still accidents but you are rocking the whole potty thing. You kids are also doing so well with picking up your toys 70% of the time. And all of you are always so good about offering to help around the house. Caleb loves doing yard work with Daddy. Elijah likes to take the recycling out to the “bicycle man”. Ellie likes being a little “mommy” and helping with the laundry. Abby is always there to give out a hug, a smile, or a song.

I think of each of you throughout my day, and I just smile. All four of you make me so happy.

Love,

Daddy

Young Living Peace & Calming Essential Oil Giveaway

Okay! Y'all said that you were interested in essential oils, so we will continue doing giveaways for them! Every month, you can come back here and enter to win a bottle of oil to use in your own home. I bought an entire Everyday Oils Essential Oils Collection to giveaway on the blog so that's 10 months worth of giveaways right there!. This is the same set of oils (with the addition of Stress Away) that comes in the Young Living Premium Starter Kit, which is where I started.

I was going to wait awhile before offering Peace & Calming as monthly giveaway because it's one of my favs! I wanted to build up to it. But it's the first essential oil blend that I fell in love with, so I can't wait any longer! Plus, with school starting back and the worry and stress that kids may feel dealing with that, I thought that a calming oil would be an appropriate choice for the "Back to School" season.
I love this blend, and for good reason! It has some really pretty citrus notes combined with the deeper notes of Ylang Ylang and Patchouli. It helps to relax and soothe tensions, and is an awesome blend to use at night while trying to fall asleep. And the scent is fantastic! Did I already mention that??

How do we use it in our home? Here are a few of the ways:

-Peace & Calming was the first oil that I used for sleep. I have a tendency to lie in bed while my mind goes a million different directions. I'm so jealous that my husband can just decide to "turn his brain off" and go to sleep. It just doesn't work that way for me. I use Peace & Calming behind my ears and on the inside of my wrists, and it shuts my brain down. I'm out like a light in 5 minutes. It's awesome! As a mom, every single minute of sleep counts!

-Worry has become one of those things that I deal with now that I have kids. One of the oils that I use to help combat that, before I need to resort to other methods, is Peace & Calming. When I feel the worry coming on, this oil is an important part of how I get back on top of it. I typically go all out in a situation like that and put it behind my ears, on the edges of my ears (never IN your ears!!!), on my temples, and on the inside of my wrists.

-I find Peace & Calming to be great for stress relief when I diffuse it. Even though it helps me rest at night, it doesn't make me tired at all when I need to be awake. Just calm, relaxed, and happy.

-This is one of the oils that I use with my kids when their little preschool bodies are in overdrive. It helps them calm back down quickly. Storytime at the library? A trip to the zoo? Yeah, Peace & Calming is in my bag, for sure!

Peace & Calming does so many more things besides just helping with occasional blues, , stress, and the odd sleepless night. It can also help support the circulatory systems as well as the body's other systems. Plus...it just smells really, REALLY good!

Seriously, I've been sitting here sniffing it while writing this post. :)

Scroll down to enter the giveaway for a chance to score your own bottle of Young Living Peace & Calming Essential Oil!

It's important to note that I use Young Living Essential Oils with my family. Not all oil brands are created equally and many can cause problems to worsen if they are not true, 100% essential oils. Even if the label says "100% pure" they are only required to have 5% essential oils in them per regulations. Please visit this link for more info on why we chose Young Living and how we believe it is the best, most effective, and most affordable essential oil option out there.

But first...
If you don't have your starter kit yet, you need one! I pulled this bottle of Peace & Calming straight from the oil set in the starter kit, and if you think this oil is neat with all that it does, you should see what the other 10 oils in the kit do! Head here to get the details on the Premium Starter Kit and the extra $40 Welcome Kit that I like to send to new oilers for free! I've had some people messaging me to find out what exactly is in the free $40 Welcome Kit, so I took a few photos:

Yeah, it's pretty awesome! :)

The Little Things Thursdays: #83...Back to School Edition!

Ready?

We are changing up Little Things Thursday this week! Instead of doing my normal numbered highlights, I'm going to share some photos of our first day back to school. It was the highlight of the week for ALL of us, so I think it's fair that it's on Little Things Thursday!
Abby, Elijah, Ellie, and Caleb

Caleb and his teacher, Mrs. Pena

Caleb was (very happily for us!) placed in a classroom this year with one teacher and two paras. Most classrooms are one teacher and one para. The new special needs process coordinator came to find us this morning and introduced herself. She had read over Caleb's IEP paperwork and our concerns thoroughly over the summer, and let us know that she purposely placed him in a classroom with an extra para. She was so kind and let us know that we could contact her at any time with concerns, and she would work with us to make sure that Caleb has the best shot. At this point, we chose not to share his diagnosis because we don't want him to be labeled in the school district, but we are really appreciating their sensitivity to his needs and our concerns with how they placed him this year. We will greatly miss Miss Mary, his teacher from last year, but I have a really good "mommy gut feeling" about Mrs. Pena after meeting her. Mrs. Pena and at least one of the paras are experienced special education teachers. I'm feeling optimistic about all of it right now, and praying this ends up being a big year for Caleb with big strides toward his goals.

Miss Sarah and Abby

Abby is back with her Miss Sarah and Miss DeAnn this year! She refers to them as "hers." We went to the school for "Meet the Teacher" last night, and Miss DeAnn walked out into the hall as we were trying to find out way around. She crouched down, threw her arms out, and yelled, "There's my girls!" and Abby and Ellie took off at a dead run to give her hugs. :) Yeah, it totally made me tear up! While Abby was with Miss Sarah and Miss DeAnn for the school year and summer school, Ellie was only with them for summer school. Unfortunately, in spite of the requests that Miss Sarah and Miss DeAnn made on our behalf, the school district wouldn't allow both girls back in the same classroom for the regular school year. But at least they were able to get Abby back! We seriously love these sweet teachers and the way they look out for all of our kids. Especially, Miss DeAnn. She considers our kids to be practically hers while they are at school, and that does SO much for my comfort level. I joked with her today that I was going to write her down on school paperwork as my emergency contact, and she was all for it. :)

Elijah and Miss Brittany

Elijah had Miss Brittany and Miss Kelsy for summer school since they co-taught a classroom for that month. Both teachers really wanted him back in their separate classrooms for the school year, but Miss Kelsy told me that Miss Brittany won. LOL! I love that these ladies love our kids! It's SO wonderful to have Miss Brittany's familiar face in Elijah's classroom and know that he is in good hands and is actually WANTED as a student!

Ellie and Miss Kelsy

Ellie loved her teacher from the last year, but Miss Jessica had to move on to another position. We spent all summer wondering how Ellie would end up with this year. We requested to have her placed with Abby in Miss Sarah and Miss DeAnn's classroom, but that was denied by the district. However, we feel very blessed that she ended up with Miss Kelsy! When Miss Kelsy lost out on Elijah, she started pulling for at least one of our kids in her room...and ended up with Ellie! Ellie and Miss Kelsy seemed to connect right away, and the match looks like a great one! I know Ellie will do well in her classroom!

What can I say? God is good and is taking care of the details even when it seems like everything is up in the air. We are excited for our new school year and hope to make some huge steps in our therapies over the coming months.

Back to School Snacking with NatureBox

School starts back up on Wednesday!

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little excited at the prospect of a couple of hours all to myself! With so many kids learning to use the potty, I am spending all of my time emptying potty seats and handing out M&Ms. That means that NOTHING else in my house is getting done.

Plus, my kids have been begging to go back to school, so I think all of us are very ready for Wednesday to come.  Let's just hope that we can keep that excitement going all year long!

One very BIG change this year, is that the state of Missouri has increased preschool from half a day to a full day. I'm still deciding how I feel about that...hmm....but the kids really need their therapies, so I'm hoping that this is a good move. Especially for Caleb.

But what that means is that my time with them everyday is shortened. They will eat lunch at school, but snack time when they get home is on me, and I want to make it special!
This last week, NatureBox sent our family one of their boxes. They have a monthly subscription service that you can sign up for, and they will send 5 full-sized packages of snacks of your choosing from their NatureBox Snack Catalog, or you can choose to let them surprise you! Since they let me pick our five snacks, I decided to ask for a few items that looked particularly yummy:

-Carrot Strawberry Fruit Chews
-Honey Crunch Crisps
-Sunshine Chips
-Lemon Pucker Pistachios
-Cranberry Almond Bites

I wanted to try a selection of salty and sweet snacks to see what they tasted like. They ended up being really good!
Every Sunday night, we keep dinner really simple and just do snacky type things. Tonight, I opted to feed the kids yogurt and offered them the NatureBox snacks to see what they thought. Hand's down, the most popular among our kiddos were the Carrot Strawberry Fruit Chews and the Honey Crunch Crisps. Sean and I tried everything as well. We really enjoyed the variety, but Sean's favorite were the Lemon Pucker Pistachios, and I can't decide between the Cranberry Almond Bites or the Honey Crunch Crisps. So good!
Clockwise from top left: Abby, Ellie, and Elijah (Caleb wasn't feeling well)

All that to say, there was definitely something for everyone in the box, and it made for a fun Sunday night snack-themed dinner! And since they are all small pieces and easy to eat with fingers, they would make great snacks for after school errands or if we come home and just want something easy to snack on until dinner. Even better, I really like that all of the 100+ snack choices are nutritionist approved and contain only wholesome ingredients with no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors. Healthy AND tasty snacks? That's awesome!
And, I wouldn't be surprised if NatureBox snacks make an appearance at future Sunday night dinners. Since I can change up our snack choices every month, I know the family won't get bored, and I'll still get my night off from cooking!

Fine Crumbs: Promotion is good for 50% off your first month to month box or $10 off your first box in your first prepaid subscription. New and US subscribers only. Not valid on gift subscriptions and may not be combined with any other offers.”

Just Between Friends Consignment Sales...Time to Start Shopping for Christmas!

This is a sponsored post by Real Mom Media and Just Between Friends. Thank you for supporting our family and our blog! As always, all opinions and words are entirely my own.

This is your official notice! The fall consignment sale season starts NEXT WEEK!

The fall sales are always a really big deal for our family. Not only am I shopping for winter clothes and shoes, I'm also doing all of my Christmas shopping and birthday shopping at the fall sales. The next sales don't come around until after the kids' birthday, so I really have to be strategic about how I shop.
Hand's down, Just Between Friends is my favorite place to do my Christmas and Birthday shopping. They have a huge selection of gently used toys that are in great condition. Honestly, I can't rationalize spending money on brand new items because the used ones are just as great! If I have $30 to spend on each kid for Christmas, I can get them 1 new toy or 4-5 used toys. It's kind of a no-brainer. In fact, I always encourage the kids' grandparents to shop the sales and save money on our kids as well.

And besides that, my kids would rather not wait for us to figure out how to take all of those plastic ties off of the new items in boxes.

So yeah, I know it's still August, but I already have Christmas on my brain. If you want to join me at one of the Just Between Friends sales in Kansas City, you can find details below. And if you don't live here, check their website for the sale nearest to you!

The Little Things Thursdays: #82

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for supporting our family and blog!

Welcome to The Little Things Thursday!!

If you are new to our link-up, we like to take a minute to look back on the little things that brightened our week. So often we get busy and forget all of the things that we enjoy as we go through our daily lives. This is an opportunity to stop, remember, and enjoy those things! 1. Reverse Airplane
Abby and Daddy

During bath time on Sunday night, I looked over to see Daddy and Abby playing the airplane game together. Totally cracked me up! Abby is always telling us, "Abby strong!!!" I guess she really is!

2. I Hate Potty Training
Oh my gosh. Am I done yet? This potty training thing is for the birds! On top of potty training, I also have to protect the important things like...toilet paper. The water faucets. The urine.

The boys especially like to go in the bathroom to play in the water and pull all of the toilet paper off of the roll. You can't see it in the photo above, but there is water everywhere...and obviously toilet paper. It's not even the worst of it though! Caleb, for some strange reason, loves playing in everyone's pee. I have to be right on top of emptying our little potty chairs, or he baptises our whole living room with urine. It's unbelievably disgusting.

3. Storytime at the Library
Clockwise from left: Caleb sitting on the librarian's lap, Ellie helping her bunnies sit on their mat for storytime, Ellie and Elijah listening to The Gingerbread Man story

After storytime activity: Elijah, Ellie, and Abby playing with the flannel graphs

Well, we decided to give it another try today. I took the kids back to the library for preschool story time. We tried this last year, and it went horribly. Our awesome occupational therapist at the time, Debbie, went with us and said that it went well, but I don't call chasing 4 kids who are running around the library a good time.

Put we now have some structured preschool under our belts, and we are a year older, so I decided to find some courage and go back. It was just me and the kids today, and it actually went pretty well! Abby and Ellie were engaged in the storytime, and Elijah was a bit restless, but did pretty well. Caleb had a harder time with the disruption in his routine, and wasn't very happy with me, but he did eventually sit on the librarian's lap for a story. He was definitely ready to leave when it was over though!

But I'd say it was successful even with Caleb's issues. That's just kind of how it works for our family right now, so I expected it. I think my mental state probably helped the success of the day as well. :)

4. Bicycle Man
Elijah

Lately, one of Elijah's favorite activities is visiting the "bicycle man." He is always looking for a reason to head out to the garage for a visit, and it's nice to have a helper assist in cleaning up the kitchen. I guess he misunderstood us when we said, "recycling bin," and now it's just way too cute to correct his name for it. So now we all refer to it as the "bicycle man."

{Another} Little Critter Books Giveaway!

Almost a year ago, I had the opportunity to give away two Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. I've always loved the Little Critter world that Mercer Mayer created. We had the books and old computer games while growing up, and I'll admit to quite a bit of nostalgia connected to the stories.

Happily, I get to host a Little Critter giveaway again this year! :)
We All Need Forgiveness is about learning to forgive others for the mistakes they make. Little Critter spills his mom's upside-down pineapple cake, and she forgives him, but Little Critter has a hard time forgiving others when they make mistakes. Instead, he is angry and mean to those around him. Until he makes a big mistake which costs everyone in his class a fun surprise. He learns that accidents happen and readily forgiving others makes life a lot more fun!

In Being Thankful, Little Critter wants a lot of stuff. Like everything he sets eyes on. (What parent hasn't experienced this?) Then he goes to the farm to visit his grandparents and gets a new perspective on the simple things in life and what it means to be thankful for what he already has.

The books are available in soft cover or as board books.

Adventures in Potty Training - Part 1

I miss diapers.

Yep, I said it. I'd rather have four kids in diapers then go through this potty training thing. I'd rather have four infants who are on a three hour feeding schedule than potty train. I would rather have a root canal than potty train...actually, I haven't had one, but I'm pretty sure if given a choice, I'd go with the root canal.

This. Is. STRESSFUL!

And also the number 1 most frustrating thing I have EVER tried to accomplish. Ever!

We now have 2 out of 4 potty trained. Abby is on deck and starting tomorrow. But lest I forget all of our potty training adventures before everyone finally has a turn to earn M&Ms, allow me to regale you with tales of the first two: Ellie and Elijah.

I started off with the best of intentions. I thought, "This is going to happen, and we are going to rock it!" I was super prepared, and I was going to train all four at once. Oh yeah, let's get this party started:
We even did the part where we all went to Walmart and picked out special underwear. Everyone got a 3-pack of a character of their choice, and then we went with generic underwear to round out the collection because underwear is surprisingly expensive for the small amount of fabric you get in a 2T/3T size. Actually, I could say the same about adult underwear, but that would totally derail this post.

Best laid plans, and all that jazz.

Day 1: So that fateful Monday morning, we were up and ready to hit potty training running. I wasn't going to force it on anyone, but I wanted to give everyone the option to try. Ellie, Abby, and Elijah were all game. Caleb wasn't interested. That's cool. I can roll with that. We will start with three kids. Look at me being all laid-back.

So there we sat. And nothing happened.

Eventually, I let kids get up and wander with instructions not to pee on kitty cat (Hello Kitty), princess (Princess Sophia) or Mickey Mouse.

Apparently, it takes more than that to keep kids from peeing themselves. Let's just say that my vinyl tablecloths that covered the couches and floor rug ended up coming in very handy. Except when Abby decided to venture upstairs. You know how normally when kids have an accident, they freeze in place with the "Oh crap!" expression on their faces? Yeah, not my Abby. Abby had an accident while upstairs playing in her closet. Instead of doing the freeze thing, she decided to run through the house while continuing to pee. Through the house. There was pee in the closet, in her room, in the hallway, down the stairs, and through the living room. By 9am that Monday morning, my whole house had been mopped.

Meanwhile, Elijah and Ellie were peeing all over the place downstairs.

My mom arrived at about 10am that morning to provide backup, and I'm pretty sure the direct quote out of my mouth when she opened the front door was, "I hate my life." She laughed. I can't wait to be a grandma.

Okay. Too many kids. Too many kids trying to figure this out at once and only one me.

"Elijah. Buddy. I think we better put you back in a diaper and focus on the girls first. You'll have a turn soon. I promise."

So by lunch on day 1, I had already reduced our potty training adventures by one child.

Unfortunately, day 1 finished with nothing actually IN the potty.

Abby and Ellie

Day 2 dawned bright and early, and the girls took their places on their potty chairs. We sat there for 2 hours and 45 minutes....and nothing. Seriously. How do these little people drink two cups of juice AND hold it that long? Abby was even dry when she woke up...and nothing. Frustrating!

So I let them up to play and put them back on the chairs every 20 minutes to try again.

Eventually, I had a whole other problem that I hadn't really figured into the equation. *I* had to go to the bathroom, and I couldn't hold it much longer. I put both girls on their potties, told them to stay there, and ran upstairs. By the time I came back down, both girls had relieved themselves. On the floor. It seems that Abby sat there until she had to go, then stood up and peed directly in front of her chair. Ellie peed across the room.

You have got to be kidding me!

But I soldiered on, pushing far more juice than I like to under normal circumstances. Thankfully, we got two successes out of Ellie, so I guess the juice was worth it.
Cita helping us pass the time. Caleb is on her lap, Ellie and Abby on the potty chairs

A few hours later, I finally had Abby sit there long enough that pee ended up in the potty. I clapped and cheered, my mom clapped and cheered. Random other kids who were standing around clapped and cheered. We pointed at the pee. We clapped some more. We handed her "chocolate". We cheered some more. And Abby was more confused than I have ever seen her in my entire life.

End day 2.

Day 3 dawned with one child in underwear: Ellie. Abby just wasn't connecting the dots. She's like our 6 cylinder baby who fires on 5 cylinders. Maybe we just need to wait a little longer until PEE + CHOCOLATES makes sense in her brain.

So Ellie was up. And on day 3, she had zero successes. Why me??????

Day 4, she went back in a diaper. Caleb had heart surgery on day 4, and that weekend was spent saying goodbye to Sean's grandma. *sigh* I may have tried to take on too much that week.

But the following Monday, Ellie and I buckled down to get this done. It took three more days, but then she got it! And she even started pooping in the potty that week as well. I was so proud, and so thankful we finally got one kid done! We took the rest of that week and the following week to perfect the art of peeing in the potty, and her accidents are few and far between now. She is very proud of being a big girl! We save a little over $50 a month every time a kid learns to go in the potty, so I was pretty thankful that we could at least eliminate those diapers

Elijah's Turn: Elijah wasn't supposed to be the 2nd kid to potty train. Everyone "knows" that girls are easier to train, so I assumed that I would be going back to Abby next. But with Abby's confusion, and Elijah's interest in the potty, we decided that he was probably our better bet.

Friends. Girls and boys DO NOT potty train the same way.

First of all, there is that whole dingaling thing. Second, there is still the dingaling thing.

It's not just a matter of getting a boy to go in the potty, you have to teach proper aim at the same time. Proper aim with minimal handling. You know what I mean?

So I dove into potty training Elijah thinking maybe we could do this in 3 or 4 days since he had watched Ellie succeed, and I knew he was gunning for the candy. Yeah, not so much.

I will say this for him though, that kid perfected the art of holding it and not having accidents on day one. In fact, he did so well, that he held it all morning and all evening for eight solid days. I get that some of y'all like to cold turkey the potty training and stop diapers even for naps and bedtime, but I am not that brave. So because I was a chicken, he would pee the second he got a diaper on for nap or bedtime.
Elijah

At the end of day 7, I told Sean that maybe we should wait a little longer on him. 7 days is a good try, right? However, Sean pointed out that we were saving money on diapers since he wasn't peeing in them, or peeing anywhere else. Good point. So on day 8, I put him in underwear again....and the kid peed in the potty mid-morning! No one was more surprised than I was. And Elijah was incredibly impressed with himself for peeing like a big boy.
Elijah

He has peed in the potty every time since then, and loves it!

Unfortunately, he is also a very smart little guy. He figured out immediately that the more he pees, the more M&Ms he gets. So he now pees, literally, every 15 minutes. He squeezes out a teaspoon or two, then get's his 2 M&Ms, waits 15 minutes, and repeats. All. Day. Long.

I don't know whether to be frustrated that I'm spending more time with his pee now than I was before he started going in the potty or impressed that he has figured out how to maximize his candy intake. So instead of putting the kibosh on the 15 minute pee intervals, I bought the party size bag of M&Ms at the store this weekend. I keep telling myself that a bag of M&Ms is cheaper than a box of diapers.

So we are now two kids into potty training, having a lot of successes, saving a lot of diapers, and going through an unbelievable amount of candy.
Ellie and Elijah

Abby is next up tomorrow. And yes. I will probably shut the door to her room so that she can't go pee in her closet again.
