A New Brand to Help Girls Grow up Strong: Brave Girls Bible Stories Giveaway!

I love books. My husband loves books. My kids love books. We are a book-loving family! But it's been awhile since I've been as excited as I am now about a new book series. Tommy Nelson just started publishing a line of books for girls, and takes "girl" to a whole new level.

First of all, here is a picture of my two favorite girls in the whole world! :) They are such hams! I asked if they wanted to take some photos, and they were ALL over it!
Ellie and Abby

Something that has become increasing important to me over the last couple of years, and especially since writing this post last year, is making sure that my girls know that it's okay to be strong, courageous, driven, leadership-minded women of the Lord. I really feel that all to often, the global-church puts women and girls in a box with what they can do and cannot do.
See my little girls? I want them to learn to live boldly and bravely at a young age. God chose to make them girls for a special purpose. I want them to embrace that!
And that's why I'm REALLY excited about this new brand called, Brave Girls, from Tommy Nelson. They have developed five characters - all girls! - to help guide young girls through the Bible and meet some of the tough and courageous women in it. In Brave Girls Bible Stories, the five girls take us on a journey to meet 30 women in the Bible and learn about their character. Each story opens with an introduction and closes with final thoughts from one of the five girls. The best part? Each of the girls are uniquely different, helping MY girls understand that embracing who they are is a gift from God!
I think this new Brave Girls brand is a big deal. It's a big deal because this kind of thinking has to start at an early age.  In my opinion, Brave Girls Bible Stories is a must-have for parents of girls.

Take a minute to check out more information on the new Brave Girls brand and the Brave Girls Bible Stories book!

{Another} Little Critter Books Giveaway!

Almost a year ago, I had the opportunity to give away two Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. I've always loved the Little Critter world that Mercer Mayer created. We had the books and old computer games while growing up, and I'll admit to quite a bit of nostalgia connected to the stories.

Happily, I get to host a Little Critter giveaway again this year! :)
We All Need Forgiveness is about learning to forgive others for the mistakes they make. Little Critter spills his mom's upside-down pineapple cake, and she forgives him, but Little Critter has a hard time forgiving others when they make mistakes. Instead, he is angry and mean to those around him. Until he makes a big mistake which costs everyone in his class a fun surprise. He learns that accidents happen and readily forgiving others makes life a lot more fun!

In Being Thankful, Little Critter wants a lot of stuff. Like everything he sets eyes on. (What parent hasn't experienced this?) Then he goes to the farm to visit his grandparents and gets a new perspective on the simple things in life and what it means to be thankful for what he already has.

The books are available in soft cover or as board books.

A Night Night Prayer Book Giveaway

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Thank you for supporting our family and blog!
This is definitely the new favorite book at our house!

We are in the process of potty training...I think. It's not going awesomely, but we are only two days into it, so I'm hoping we turn the corner soon. With all of our potty time, the opportunity to read seems endless (endless, I'm telling you).
Cita, Ellie, Elijah, and Abby (Caleb is sitting on Cita's lap, behind Ellie)

Thankfully, this book arrived just before we started our new project. We have read it many times in the last 48 hours, and it still gets everyone's attention when the cover is opened. The best part is the "Shhh..." on every page. A little chorus of voices joins in with mine when I get to those parts. It kind of melts my heart in spite of the puddle of pee sitting at my feet. Yep, I'm definitely looking for the cute parts of life right now, and this book fits the bill!
Cita, Caleb, Ellie, and Abby

Sure, it's a bedtime book, but my kids don't notice that at all. Morning, noon, or night, they love getting to read this one!

If you'd like to see a preview of the inside of the book, you can click here. You can also find the book on the Thomas Nelson website!

Hermie & Friends: I Will Trust God DVD Giveaway

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Thank you for supporting our family and blog!
As a Tommy Nelson Mommy, sometimes I get to review books and sometimes I get to review movies.

Today is a movie day!

Hermie and Friends is the DVD series based on Max Lucado's children's books. If you aren't familiar with this series, it's kind of across between It's a Bug's Life characters and VeggieTales-ish stories. While the animation isn't quite on par with either Pixar or VeggieTales, the characters still tell wonderful stories!

Hermie and Friends: I Will Trust God No Matter What focuses on learning to trust God even when we don't know the why behind it. The movie contains two different episodes that each work to reinforce that concept.

In the first episode, Hermie and the High Seas, God tells Hermie to build a boat, but doesn't tell him why. His friends make fun of him, but they quickly learn why a boat is needed when it starts raining.

In the second episode, Who is in Charge Anyway, Freddie the Flea sees all of the talents and strengths of the other bugs around him, but doesn't feel like he has any himself. He learns by the end of the episode that God specially designs each of us and equips us with what we need. Even though our uniqueness may not be obvious, we should trust that His design is perfect!

Since this is a review, I do have to point out the parts that aren't my favorite. Each episode starts with an awkward dialogue between Max Lucado in his garden and the animated Hermie sitting on a bench. Lucado writes great stories, but acting isn't his strength. I know they have it set up so that Lucado and Hermie introduce the concept and revisit it at the end, but it ends up coming off as cheesy and forced. Also, my three-year-olds lose interest in the movie if they have to sit through it. So my advice? Either watch those beginning and ending scenes on your own, or hit the fast forward button.

But other than that, it's a cute DVD that works well for boys and girls between the ages of 2-7.

Every Day a Blessing Devotional Giveaway

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Thank you for supporting our family and blog!
Back in January, I said that I had two devotional giveaways for you. Then I broke my leg. As entertaining as I'm sure it would have been to read what I'd have to say while high on persocet, I decided to spare you that and bump this back a month.

Your welcome. :)

So although it's February, I would still love to get one of these devotional books in your hands! While the last one for God's Little Princess Bedtime Devotional was for little girls, Every Day a Blessing Devotional is for slightly older kids and works for either gender.

The Every Day a Blessing is perfectly set up for active kids who can only pay attention for so long. Each devotional is one page. It starts with a verse of the day, and then a short text that speaks directly to the child. I think my favorite part though, is the prompt at the end of the reading to go DO something. I love that he book encourages putting something in action as a way of reinforcing the concept. I think things often stick better for people when they physically move from the page of a book into real life.

At least, I do...and I'm in my late 20's!

My kids are several years away from being able to use this book, but I really loved the focus on recognizing blessings in our own lives and blessings others as well. What a wonderful mindset to teach moldable hearts!

If you'd like to see a preview of the inside of the book, you can click here. Clicking directly on the pages of the book will blow them up so that you don't have to use squint-a-vision. You can also find the book on Amazon!

God's Little Princess Bedtime Devotional Giveaway

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Thank you for supporting our family and blog!

January is the perfect time of the year to think about picking up a new devotional book. Tommy Nelson has graciously sent me two devotional books to review and giveaway to get your year started off right!

Today, I'd like to give away the first one!
Sheila Walsh is a well-know author who has written many children's books and adult books. She is the author of the Gigi: God's Little Princess books which have also been turned into a DVD series. The God's Little Princess Bedtime Devotional is one of the books in the God's Little Princess line.

First of all, I'm totally disappointed that I forgot to take pictures of my girls with this book. Sadness. I took photos of other things, but totally spaced this one. So you will have to use your imagination. Sorry!

*sigh*  Can I still claim pregnancy/baby brain if my kids are almost 3??

Okay, on to the book:

I know this has nothing to do with what is inside the book, but the cover has a sparkly crown with pink jewels. It's really cute! My girls thought it was so pretty, especially since they love putting on their princess dresses. The more sparkles, the better!

Each devotional inside the book is two pages long. The first page has a Bible verse and short devotion expanding on what the verse talks about. The second page is called "Giggles and Grace" and has real life applications to discuss with your daughter. That page also has a short prayer that you can read aloud.
They are very short segments in order to keep the attention of young girls, and are written in an easy-to-understand way. The illustrations are also charming, and of course, there is a bright pink ribbon to bookmark your place.

The bedtime devotional is still a little on the old side for our girls. I'd say it is probably best suited to the 4-8 year old age range. But we will definitely hold on to this one for the future, and maybe pick up the Goodnight Warrior Devotional (also by Sheila Walsh!) for the boys when we start using it.

If you are looking to pick one up now, I found the God's Little Princess Bedtime Devotional for $10.79 on Amazon.

My Story Joseph and My Story David: Bible Sticker Books Giveaway

We are in the thick of the giveaways that I've lined up for you before Christmas! We have four left in the next two weeks. Hang on tight!

Today's giveaway is our monthly resource giveaway from Tommy Nelson: the My Story Joseph and the My Story David sticker books. How fun is that?!

They very kindly sent me four copies of the My Story David Sticker Book so that my kids could all enjoy the story and filling in the blanks with stickers. You know what that means! Group activity time!

The kids were all thrilled to get their own books. They share everything, so anytime they get to have something to themselves, it's a pretty big deal. I promptly had four little people curled up next to me on the couch so that I could read their new story aloud.

I really love the fun way that the story is written. It's highly accessible to kids and makes the story come alive. I think kids up to 6 or 7 years old would really enjoy the engaging story, and of course, the stickers!

Once we were finished with the story, we all gathered around the table to work on the sticker part. A section at the back contains two pages of stickers that can be used to fill in the blanks in the last part of the book. There are even extra stickers for use in other projects....or to stick all over the window, floor, and other books lying around....yeah, they took a few liberties with the stickers.
But even though the stickers ended up in a few extra spots, they kids really enjoyed getting to interact with the story of David!

If you would like to see inside of each book, you can click here: My Story David and My Story Joseph

You can find My Story David and My Story Joseph on Amazon for $4.49 each right now!

Tommy Nelson is sending one copy of both My Story Joseph and My Story David to one A Beautiful Ruckus reader. Please use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. Winning entries will be validated prior to announcing the winner with an alternate drawn if the entries cannot be verified.

Itsy Bitsy Christmas by Max Lucado Review and Giveaway

We are only six weeks away from Christmas. What?! That's crazy close! So over the next six weeks, I have several really fun giveaways lined up to help Christmas sparkle just a little brighter at your house!

Today, I'm giving away Max Lucado's book Itsy Bitsy Christmas, You're Never to Little for His Love!

The book centers on Itsy and Bitsy, two small mice who live in Bethlehem. They find out that a King is coming to their town and excitedly share their news with the animals in the stable. But every animal that they share their good news with tells them that Bethlehem is too small and unimportant to ever host a King. Still, they believe a King is coming, and search through the town looking for him. At the end of the day, they still haven't found him, and disappointed and hurt, they return home to their stable. The other animals were right. Their little town really is too small for someone so important. However, as they approach the stable, they discover that the King is actually sleeping right in their home! In wonder and awe they learn that the King really does care and love each of us, no matter how small!

This is a precious book with beautiful illustrations and a sweet story. It would be the perfect book to read as a family on Christmas Eve while enjoying cozy pajamas and hot chocolate!

Itsy Bitsy Christmas retails for $14.99, but is currently on sale for $11.41 on Amazon. Also, if your kids love coloring as much as mine do, make sure you print off these free Itsy Bitsy Christmas coloring pages!

Little Critter Books Giveaway

Back when household computers were still a new thing, we had a computer with a few games. Oregon Trail (the original version!) and a few books that were turned into games pretty much made up our selection. Mercer Mayer books software made the top of the list because we could click on things and make them sing or dance. Whoa...we have had some big advances in technology since then!

This month, Tommy Nelson had Mercer Mayer books on their resource list. I haven't thought about those old computer games in so long, but seeing these books on the resource list brought back all sorts of memories!
So for me, this giveaway is a lot of fun! I'm giving away two books (with actual pages) that are both written by Mercer Mayer: It's True! and You Go First.

It's True is about Little Critter and how he learns to tell the truth. He spends most of the book telling almost the truth, but he keeps leaving little details out of what he tells other people. One day, he tells his whole school the almost truth and then realizes that he will be found out. Little Critter learns a very important lesson that telling a half-truth is the same as lying.

In You Go First, Little Critter decides that the best place to be is in the front of the line. He pushes friends out of the way, jumps in front of them, and demands that he go first. His friends get tired of him always having to be first, and tell him that. By the end of the book, something happens that causes Little Critter to realize that always needing to be first isn't what a good friend does. He changes the way he approaches his friends, and learns how to get along with them.

The books retail for $3.99 each, and can be found at Amazon.

God's Love for You Bible Storybook Giveaway

We have two giveaways from Tommy Nelson during October along with a couple of other fun giveaways that I've been working on for a few weeks. Stick around and maybe pick up a few fun Christmas gifts before the real rush begins!

God's Love for You is a Bible Storybook put out by World Vision. World Vision does very similar things to what Compassion International does, so we really like the emphasis that they put on sponsoring and caring for children in poverty.

Like many Bible storybooks, this one has Bible stories that are adapted for children to make them easier to understand. What makes it unique is that the Bible stories are interspersed with stories about current people who are experiencing similar situations to what we read about in the Bible. The two parts work together to bring the stories to life while encouraging children to understand and have compassion for those who aren't as fortunate as they are. The authors even thought so far as to include "Did You Know?" facts about the areas the stories refer to. For example, did you know that the world's largest mushroom grows in Zambia? It can grow up to three feet!

World Vision has done a wonderful job creating a resource that parents can use to reinforce Bible stories, introduce their children to other cultures and living situation, and keep it all interesting the whole time!

The God's Love for You Bible Storybook retails for $19.99. You can find it on Tommy Nelson or Amazon.

The Read and Share Bible - Giveaway

I'm really excited to bring you this Tommy Nelson resource! But let me explain how I got my hand's on it in the first place.

Every month, I get a list of resources from Tommy Nelson that they let me choose from for my kids. We have been really blessed with the books that they have added to our library, and hope that you are enjoying the giveaways as well!

This particular resource wasn't listed. The way I found it is that a reader asked me for a recommendation on a good Bible devotional-type book for her toddler. I asked the company and other Tommy Nelson Mommy Bloggers what they would suggest and this one was mentioned over and over again. Even though this book wasn't on the resource list, they kindly offered to let me review and give one away. Yay!
So to my reader who asked for the recommendation, "Thank you!" This book is excellent for my kids too! I'm so glad you sent me on a treasure hunt to find it!

The Read and Share Bible is the perfect Bible for toddlers and young readers. It has more than 200 illustrated Bible stories, written in a simplified way so that little ones can understand them. Each two page spread features illustrations, a short Bible story, and prompts to encourage your child to think about the story and dialogue with you. Each story and discussion can easily be done in five minutes or less, so that you won't lose the attention of your little reader.

I love the way this book is set up, and greatly appreciate that it has been extra carefully reviewed to make sure that it stays accurate to the Biblical text while still being age appropriate for my kids.

I foresee many wonderful bedtime devotions in our future!

Maybe you would like to win a copy for yourself? (Yes! You do!)

The Blessings Jar: A Story about Being Thankful - Giveaway

When I received the July resource list from Tommy Nelson, I saw two books that I thought looked great! So this month, I'm going to giveaway both books since I just couldn't narrow it down to one choice. The first book giveaway is today, and you can look for the second one at the end of the month.

The Blessings Jar: A Story About Being Thankful is about a little girl named, Punky, who is having an icky awful day. She wakes up in the morning with a case of the grumpies that threaten to make her entire day miserable. Her Grammy suggests that she take a jar and fill it with things that remind her of God's blessings during the day. The rest of the book is the story of her adventures that day and the items she collects as she goes. At the end of the book, she realizes that her grumpies disappeared as she refocused on all of the good things that God has given her.

Plus, she has a dog named Jake that my kids absolutely love to point out on each page!

The book retails for $12.99 and can be found on Thomas Nelson and Amazon. You can flip through the book HERE and also go HERE to print off some free coloring pages!

Heaven is for Real: for Little Ones Giveaway

I love being a Tommy-Mommy
Have you heard of the book, Heaven is for Real? It took all of the top book lists by storm over the last few years. It's the true story of a four-year-old boy who had emergency surgery and journeyed to heaven and back while he was on the operating table. The book is what he told his dad he saw while he was in heaven.

I haven't read the original Heaven is for Real, but Tommy Nelson sent me Heaven is for Real for Little Ones this month as my June resource.
As soon as it came in the mail, we all sat down to read it, and I was curious to see how they would handle a near death experience in a children's book. The board book doesn't actually touch on Colton's story at all. Instead, it is simplified description of what he saw in heaven without going into the operation/traumatic experience that he and his family went through. It is a beautiful way to introduce the concept of heaven to little ones while explaining how much Jesus really truly loves them!

Heaven is for Real for Little Ones, is a book with sweet illustrations depicting children running, playing, and exploring heaven with Jesus. I really loved how it talks about the beauty of heaven and all the wonderful things that we will get to do and experience there without any pain or tears. In fact, this little board book reminded me about how much I'm looking forward to one day being there myself!

Heaven is for Real for Little Ones retails for $7.99 and is available through Tommy Nelson and other major book retailers. If you'd like a peak inside the cover, feel free to click HERE.

My Princess Bible Purse Giveaway

I love being a Tommy-Mommy
I'm delighted to share with you the Tommy Nelson Resource book for May! I love that this company works hard to bring us the best books to help us raise our kids for the Lord. It's a pleasure to get to giveaway one of those books every month!
I used to attend Vacation Bible School while growing up. I distinctly remember the VBS that was all about the Fruits of the Spirit, and that has stayed with me over the years. Never underestimate what a child will remember in their adult life!

My Princess Bible Purse is a great way to introduce the Fruits of the Spirit to little girls. Each page spread focuses on one of the fruits with a simple rhyme helping kids understand what each fruit means. With the whimsical drawings throughout the book, it's really engaging...even for mom!
It's geared for the 2-5 year age range, although I think princesses who are a little older would still enjoy it as well! The book looks just like a bright pink, glittery purse and even has a handle! Each of the pages are made out of a thicker cardstock type of paper to reduce the chances of tearing. It makes a great transition between board books and paper books while little girls learn to gently turn the pages (we are still working on that here!) If you want a peek inside, feel free to check out this online flipbook!
My Princess Bible Purse retails for $9.99 and is available through Tommy Nelson and other retailers.

"Prayers for Boys" and "Prayers for Girls" Book Giveaway

I’m thrilled to be part of the Tommy Nelson Mommy BloggerProgram! They chose a few select bloggers to review their products and offer giveaways to their readers, and A Beautiful Ruckus was chosen as one of them! Whoohoo! They are one of the top Christian publishing houses for children’s books and DVDs, so the chance to review and use their high quality materials with my kids plus offer them to you, is really exciting!
Thomas Nelson Toddler Padded Hard Cover Board Book
April 30th is National Honesty Day, so that is the direction that Tommy Nelson went with this month's resources. While it’s true that my kids aren’t “telling” lies yet, it is obvious that they try not to get caught when they do something wrong. We have lots of kids books in our living room, and also a bookshelf with adult books on it. For some reason, the most interesting books in the living room are the adult books. We have tried to explain that they can read them when they are older, but they insist on wanting the books now. Unfortunately, they have paper pages. Paper pages and quadruplet toddlers don’t mix at all.

They know that shelf is off limits, so when I do hear the books being pulled down, I immediately go to investigate, and the kids scatter so they won’t get caught. We have a lot of work to do with teaching them to own up when they do wrong (or preferably NOT doing wrong in the first place!)

That’s why I was delighted to find the books Prayers for Boys and Prayers for Girls on their resource list! The book's simple poetry teaches kids that they can talk to God in every circumstance. For parents looking for an introduction to the idea of talking to God, these books fit the bill perfectly! Sean and I want our kids to learn that they can talk to God and that He is watching and cares about what they are doing. Those kind of lessons are important to start instilling now.

The whimsical drawings are engaging and vibrant, and the handle on the board books make carrying them about the house easy. My kids love looking through the books…multiple times a day! In fact, when our package arrived in the mail, I had to get in line to look at the books myself. The kids took off with them as soon as I got them out of the box!
